KRZA PROGRAM UNDERWRITING
Contact person: Andrea Marquez, KRZA Administrative Coordinator
Thank you for your interest in program underwriting on KRZA! KRZA is a commercial-free, public radio station, dependent on the financial support and volunteer work of many individuals, businesses, and organizations that believe in the mission of community radio. Unlike many media outlets, KRZA is not merely a radio signal. It is a network of people who believe in the power of working together; a grassroots project that welcomes participation and input from our community. Your inquiry demonstrates that you already have the inclination to be a more active participant in KRZA’s mission. Thank you!
KRZA programming is an ever-evolving entity. The nature of our funding base allows our programming to be responsive to the communities we serve. We feature national news and cultural programming via National Public Radio, as well as quality local news, music, and cultural programs that are primarily produced by volunteer broadcasters. We strive to make KRZA, in the truest sense, a voice of the people, and are committed to maintaining our independent, community sound. Therefore, program underwriting is not only a way for you to show your support for a specific program broadcast on KRZA, but an opportunity for you to make a statement about your alliance with the overall mission of community radio.
By definition program underwriting is a financial contribution made to public radio in support of specific programming. For accounting purposes, there are two types of program underwriting on KRZA: standard underwriting and short term underwriting. Standard underwriting is long-term support for a specific program, while short term underwriting is support for a variety of different programs over a short period of time.
Donations for either standard or short term underwriting are acknowledged over the air with short announcements during the underwriter’s program(s) of choice. Because KRZA is a public radio station, announcement content is limited by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), National Public Radio, and KRZA policies. Specific announcement guidelines and restrictions for KRZA underwriting are enclosed with this letter, but we encourage you to be creative within these guidelines! Beyond the basic information of your business, for example, you may want to make a statement about your philosophy of volunteerism, your role as a connecting force in the community, or your commitment to a particular cause (such as a non-profit organization).
KRZA offers a unique and valuable venue for businesses to connect with their patrons in a positive and mutually beneficial way. The community, grassroots orientation of KRZA makes a statement about its listeners as well as those who support it financially. We hope you agree, and very much look forward to working with you!
KRZA-FM UNDERWRITING: ANNOUNCEMENT GUIDELINES
Please keep in mind that underwriting announcements are not commercials. Adhering to the following guidelines ensures that your announcement is both legal and well-received by the listeners of our station. KRZA’s underwriting guidelines consider the regulations put forth by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and National Public Radio, as well as our mission as a community radio station serving Colorado’s San Luis Valley and North-Central New Mexico.
All announcements made to recognize program underwriting contributions MUST begin with a statement that clearly identifies the announcement as program underwriting. Other guidelines specific to the various types of program underwriting follow:
Enhanced underwriting announcements
Underwriting announcements made on behalf of for-profit entities are allotted 20 seconds of airtime. Generally, this is the equivalent of about 40 words. (For the purpose of word count, telephone numbers are worth 5 words.)
Announcements may include:
-
Name of the business, organization or individual, mentioned at the beginning and end of the announcement
-
Historical information
-
Location, telephone number, or web address (one of these)
-
Basic, value-neutral description of products or services (3 maximum)
-
Non-promotional slogan
Announcements may NOT include:
-
Comparative or qualitative language (reliable, friendly, best)
-
Calls-to-action (call, stop by, we can be reached at, if you’re looking for)
-
Price information, including information about sale events, discounts, or allusion to cost
-
Inducements to buy, sell, rent, or lease
-
Repetition of information
-
Jingles or other promotional slogans
While the FCC affords considerable latitude in the content of underwriting announcements, KRZA respectfully asks underwriters not to include hours of operation, brand names of products (other than their own,) and the names of other businesses or corporations in their announcement.
Non-profit and KRZA mission message announcements
Non-profit and mission message announcements are allotted 30 seconds of airtime, or no more than 60 words of copy. (Keep in mind that telephone numbers are counted as 5 words.) Contact information is also not limited. Otherwise, non-profits are held to the same guidelines as for-profit entities. Non-profit organizations promoting their own work, or for-profit entities promoting either the mission of KRZA or another non-profit in the listening community, fall into this category.
To ensure that your announcement is in compliance with the above guidelines, please contact Andrea Marquez, KRZA’s Administrative Coordinator, at (719) 589-8844 or (800) 290-0887.
