A MESSAGE FROM THE KRZA BOARD OF DIRECTORS
The Board of KRZA would like to inform our members and listeners about some of the issues confronting the station at this point in time.
Around five years ago KRZA found itself somewhere around $100,000 in debt, due to various dubious expenditures and choices that were made by the governing board at that time. Morale was at an all-time low. Staff were not being paid and some strange things were going on in the financial management of the station. When the previous board members left, or were asked to leave, we could not even access many of the station's financial records.
A new board was installed and little by little we have brought the station around to the point where we have drug ourselves out of that hole and the station is just about even. During the last few years, however, our fund drives have regularly fallen short of goals and at the same time our grant funding has been reduced by over $20,000.
Just treading water, however, cannot be an option. As our physical plant and transmission technologies go through their inevitable deterioration due to time. Thus we find ourselves at this critical junction for our beloved radio station. We have cut our paid staff to an absolute minimum.
Gerald Rodriguez, our station manager, has gone above and beyond the call of duty in trying to fix our transmitter on San Antonio Mountain. He has traveled up to the top of the mountain at least seven times in the past two weeks. Since the dirt road to the summit washed out from Summer rains Gerald hiked the 2 1/2 hours to the transmitter and back carrying tools. We are still waiting for the appropriate parts and will get our signal going again as soon as possible.
What we need to convey to you, our listeners, is that we the board of KRZA are still as committed as ever to keeping KRZA on the air and are doing everything we can to continue to provide our unique and vital programming which fulfills our mission statement. And so, as a board, we need to communicate that this Fall Fund Drive will be absolutely critical to the survival of KRZA. We cannot sustain the station at our current levels of funding. Thus if you value our community radio station we need your renewed commitment and investment in KRZA. Please try to contribute as much as you possible can this year.
Thank You! Sincerely, the KRZA Board of Directors
